A number of European countries, in connection with developments in the global oil market, have proposed discussing the possibility of imposing a special tax on oil companies generating super-profits.
According to AFP, Germany, Italy, Austria, Poland, Portugal, and Spain put forward this initiative.
The finance ministers of these countries sent a letter to the Minister of Finance of Ireland, which currently holds the presidency of the European Union. The letter proposes including the issue of a special tax on the windfall profits of oil companies on the agenda of the upcoming EU finance ministers' meeting in Dublin this month.
The authors of the proposal aim to discuss a common approach to this issue at the European level, taking into account how changes in the global oil market affect the financial performance of major energy companies.
