Information indicates that the kumquat, a name meaning "golden orange," was first cultivated in China. In the mid-19th century, around the 1850s, this fruit began to be introduced to European countries. Later, its cultivation was also established in North America.
There are several varieties of kumquats. Among them, the Nagami and Meiwa varieties are the most widely distributed.
The Nagami kumquat is mainly cultivated in the USA. It has an oblong shape and a slightly more sour taste compared to other varieties. The Meiwa kumquat is primarily grown in China. The fruits of this variety are rounder, and their taste is much sweeter than that of Nagami.
