Future of Amudarya and Syrdarya Water Resources to Be Discussed

An international symposium will be held at the University of Central Asia on September 17–18 to discuss water security, the future of the Amu Darya and Syr Darya, and the impact of climate change on regional water resources. Scientists and representatives from different countries will take part.
On September 17–18, the University of Central Asia will host an international symposium dedicated to the future of the water resources of the Amudarya and Syrdarya rivers, ensuring water security in the region, and the impact of climate change on water sources.
The international event will bring together scientists from countries across three continents, members of the creative community, and local residents. During the symposium, important issues related to the current state of Central Asia's water resources and future development directions will be discussed.
A special session will focus on the main sources forming the flows of the Amudarya and Syrdarya rivers — glaciers, snow cover, and precipitation in the region. Arno Kaiserman, Senior Research Fellow at the Mountain Societies Research Institute of the University of Central Asia, will present the results of scientific research on the future of the two major river basins.
During the event, analyses will be made regarding the potential impacts of rising air temperatures, the melting of glaciers and permafrost, changes in snowmelt timing, and the shift of precipitation from snow to rain on river runoff.
On the first day of the symposium, events will be held in both face-to-face and online formats. On the second day, practical sessions and an online consultation will be organized on establishing public monitoring of the rivers' condition and developing joint ecological initiatives.
