New King of Norway Haakon VIII ascends the throne

Following the death of King Harald V at the age of 89 on August 28, his son Haakon VIII has ascended the Norwegian throne. The 53-year-old monarch will continue the royal motto “All for Norway”. His wife, Mette-Marit, has become Queen of Norway.
There has been a change of monarch in Norway. Following the death of former King Harald V, his son Haakon VIII has become the new king of the country. From now on, he will rule under the name Haakon VIII.
According to information from the Royal Court of Norway, the new monarch chose the phrase "Everything for Norway" as the motto for his reign. This motto has been used by several kings in the country's history, including Harald V.
Former King Harald V passed away at the age of 89 in a hospital in Oslo. Following his death, 53-year-old Haakon VIII assumed the duties of the monarch in accordance with constitutional traditions.
The new king already held his first official meeting with members of the government on Friday. In the coming days, he is expected to take an official oath before the parliament and the government in accordance with Article 9 of the Constitution of Norway.
The constitutional powers of the king in Norway are broader compared to some other Scandinavian monarchies. The king signs state laws and traditionally chairs the meetings of the Council of Ministers every Friday.
In recent years, Haakon has represented the royal family at most official events due to his parents' health conditions. Therefore, he already has a certain level of experience in state affairs and the duties of the monarch.
With Haakon VIII's accession to the throne, his wife Mette-Marit has also attained the status of Queen of Norway.
